About

Between April 1756 and May 1757, Cato Cole purchased shoe buckles, pipes, two knives, rum, buttons, fabric, knee buckles, a snuff box, and a small pamphlet at Elijah Williams' Deerfield store. Enslaved in the household of Deerfield's minister, the Reverend Jonathan Ashley, Cato was among at least 18 free and enslaved African American who had accounts at the Williams store. Cato's purchase of "a small pamphlet" suggests that he was at least partially literate. Cato was typical of other customers who kept a running account with the store's owner. Customers were not expected to pay at the time of purchase and could provide cash, goods, or services as payment later. Cato paid Williams for his spring and summer purchases in cash in April and July of 1756.
