A colonial crutch was simply a pole with a padded cross piece at the top to go under the arm. It would have been handmade. Thomas Rowlandson's satirical print, "Bath Races" from his "Comforts of Bath" series illustrates a number of wheelchair users and people with crutches racing down a hill, revealing the era's harsh intolerance of disability.
