About

Unlike today, most colonial children's parents couldn't afford to buy them toys and games from a store and there wasn't much available to buy. Toys were usually homemade by the child or someone they knew. Also, most toys and games often not provide immediate gratification, requring dexterity and skill to enjoy them, like this hoop toy. A child would give the hoop a starting push with their hand and then keep the hoop rolling by knocking on the outside of it with a stick. It took careful aim, just the right amount of knocking, and lots of practice to direct the hoop where the player wanted it to go.
