Enslaved from childhood until the age of 45, Abijah Prince (c1706-1794) served in two colonial wars, gained his freedom, owned real estate in multiple towns, and became a respected resident of Guilford, Vermont. His marriage in 1756 to Lucy Terry of Deerfield, Massachusetts, secured the freedom of the first known African American poet in North America.
